Laser Hair Removal - FAQs

Laser Hair Removal : Frequntly Asked Questions

How does hair reduction work?

At Medical Aesthetics of New England, PC, our hair removal lasers generate a pulse of laser light that penetrates into the skin and delivers the energy at the root of the hair, destroying the hair root while sparing the surrounding skin.

What areas can be treated?

At Medical Aesthetics of New England, PC, we treat all areas of the body, except around the eyes.

How long does the procedure take?

It depends on the area being treated. It will typically take 5 to 10 minutes to treat the underarms and up to an hour for legs.

Is it painful?

Anesthesia is not required - the only effect felt is a hot and tingling sensation that is usually well tolerated. At Medical Aesthetics of New England, PC, we have several cooling devices to use if you desire.

Is it safe?

Complications are rare. In less than 1% of cases, skin lightning or darkening may occur. It is advisable to wear sunblock when in the sun during the month following laser treatment. At Medical Aesthetics of New England, PC, we have physician sunblock in SPF 60 and 65 that provides blockage of both UVA and UVB rays.

How many treatments will I require?

Because hair grows in multiple cycles, several treatments are necessary with any hair removal treatment. The number depending on type of hair and location. At Medical Aesthetics of New England, PC, we find that 4 to 6 treatments are optimal for most areas. Treatments are usually performed 4 to 6 weeks apart.

What results can I expect?

Clinical studies have demonstrated a permanent reduction in hair numbers after each treatment. Hair follicles in the active growth are destroyed. As treatment continues, fewer and fewer follicles are left.

Is it permanent?

Yes. After each treatment, the hair that re-grows is thinner, lighter and less numerous.
