How does the laser work to treat acne?

At Medical Aesthetics of New England, PC, we use a laser light by Aramis that passes through the outer layer of the skin into the dermal layer without damaging the surface of the skin. The light gently warms the dermis and shrinks the overactive sebaceous glands. This decreases production of sebum, which is one of the principal causes of acne. Because of the lessened oil production, acne improves.

What areas can be treated?

At Medical Aesthetics of New England, PC, we treat all parts of the body for acne except the area immediately around the eye.

How long does the procedure take?

It depends on the area being treated. It will typically take 20 minutes to treat a full face.

Is it painful?

Anesthesia is not required – the skin is cooled during the procedure, so the effect is that of having an ice cube pressed against the face. In some cases a mild tingling sensation can be felt. At Medical Aesthetics of New England, PC, we also have many types of local anesthesia available if needed.

Is it safe?

Complications are extremely rare. In less than 1% of cases, skin lightning or darkening may occur. At Medical Aesthetics of New England, PC, we strongly advise you to wear sunblock when in the sun during the month following laser treatment.

How many treatments are required?

At Medical Aesthetics of New England, PC, we suggest 4 to 6 treatments delivered at two-week intervals. Depending on the severity of the acne, more treatments may be needed. To maintain results, treatments every 6 months may be recommended..

What results can I expect?

Although 100% of the acne may not clear, studies have shown a significant decrease in the number of pimples with the right treatment plan. At Medical Aesthetics of New England, PC, we provide a customized treatment plan created just for you.

Can the laser acne treatment be combined with other treatments?

Yes. At Medical Aesthetics of New England, PC, we can combine laser acne treatment with other technologies that improve the surface of the skin, such as microdermabrasion, chemical peels, red and blue light phototherapy, and acne-specific cosmeceuticals, as part of an overall skin care routine. Your doctor can discuss the various options appropriate for your particular skin type and condition.

Is it permanent?

The thermally altered changes in the sebaceous glands are permanent. In order to maintain the results, your Provider at Medical Aesthetics of New England, PC may suggest additional maintenance treatments.

Are there any side effects?

Side effects are minimal and are generally limited to a slight redness of the skin. This should not persist for more than a few minutes after treatment. It is important that these instructions are followed after the procedure:

Avoid direct sun for 72 hours; use the recommended sunscreen twice daily.
Perform the prescribed daily skin care routine, avoiding the use of retinoids or strong astringents for 48 hours.
