Comedone Extraction : Frequently Asked Questions

What are comedones?

Comedones are the skin-coloured, small bumps frequently found on the forehead and chin of those with acne. A comedone consists of a plug of sebaceous and dead skin material. The comedone may be open (a "blackhead" – which is black because the sebaceous material becomes oxidized. This is not dirt) or closed (a "whitehead" – where the follicle is completely blocked).

What can acne comedone extraction help?

Treats and reduces scarring from acne lesions that have developed into comedones.

What is acne comedone extraction?

Acne comedone extraction helps to remove the inflammatory pus and infection that sometimes results from acne. These are lesions that look like a boil or abscess. If untreated they can result in scarring because they are full of acids, bacteria and other components that destroy the skin. At Medical Aesthetics of New England, PC these steps may include:

  • Opening the comedone.
  • Removing the material within the comedone.
  • Injecting the area with a small amount of steroid. This helps to stop the inflammation and destruction that is occurring in the skin.

Is acne comedone extraction safe?

Yes. The procedure has been performed by physicians for many years and is well recognized as an effective way to help reduce the damage that acne comedones cause. Remember that by the time the comedone has formed, scarring has already begun to occur. The acids and bacteria will already have caused significant damage to the dermis of the skin. This treatment is designed to limit the damage as soon as possible. Bruising and pigmentation changes are possible after the procedure, and sometimes the area will have a different color or complexion than surrounding skin.

How soon will I see results?

The initial healing of the lesion occurs very quickly after an extraction and injection, often within in a few days. If left untreated, they could last for weeks. Initially the area will be a little sore and swollen. For optimal results:

  • Do not remove the bandage for at least 24 hours.
  • Avoid direct sun in this area as much as possible; at Medical Aesthetics of New England, PC, we have sunblock that protects from both UVA and UVB rays and suggest it be used twice daily. This will reduce the chances of pigmentation irregularities.
  • Use the recommended daily skincare products, avoiding the use of retinoids, blenders, or strong astringents for 48 hours.
  • Contact us if there is any persistent discomfort, redness or any sign of infection.
