Laser Skin Tightening : Frequently Asked Questions

What is Aramis?

At Medical Aesthetics of New England, PC, we use the Aramis by Asclepion, a non-ablative laser (as well at the Affirm by Cynosure). It emits laser light at a wavelength of 1540nm with an integrated contact cooling handpiece to protect the epidermis. The laser light heats the dermis, causing the body to produce more collagen. This will help soften fine lines/wrinkles and slow the aging process. In addition to anti-aging, the Aramis can also be used to soften/fill-in scars and is particularly effective to treat acne. Progressive treatments can remove damage caused by age, the sun, and other environmental factors, leaving skin looking years younger.

What can Aramis help?

At Medical Aesthetics of New England, PC, we treat fine lines, age spots, acne and small scars with the Aramis laser.

What areas can be treated?

All parts of the body can be treated.

How long does the procedure take?

It depends on the area being treated. It will typically take 20 to 30 minutes to treat a full face.

Is it painful?

Anesthesia is not required – the skin is cooled during the procedure, so the effect is that of having an ice cube pressed against the face. In some cases a mild tingling sensation may be felt.

Is Aramis safe?

Yes. Aramis is non-invasive. It can be used on all skin types and ages. Unlike other non-ablative devices on the market and certain skin rejuvenation treatments, the Aramis we use at Medical Aesthetics of New England, PC is virtually painless. It takes about 20 to 30 minutes and should include a series of sessions, usually performed monthly. Best of all, Aramis is surprisingly affordable. Complications are extremely rare. In less than 1% of cases, skin lightning or darkening may occur. It is advisable to wear sunblock when in the sun during the month following laser treatment.

How soon can results be seen and what can I expect?

It will take 6 months before the peak of collagen development is seen. It is very important to view this procedure as an anti-aging intervention. Many providers have before and after pictures of patients showing great visible results, but this is not always immediately apparent to every patient. Several scientific studies have confirmed significant collagen formation if the full series of 4 to 5 treatments is completed. Acne patients may notice that some of their lesions are less swollen, even after the first treatment. Not every acne patient responds, although usually 8 out of 10 patients have a significantly noticeable result. When the Aramis is combined with a comprehensive skin care program, including pre-treating the skin to enhance treatments and applying advanced repair and hydrating products after the treatments, the newly exposed skin will stay soft and youthful. At Medical Aesthetics of New England, PC, we can recommend products to you that will enhance the treatments for you.

How many treatments are required?

Typically, 4 to 6 treatments delivered at 4-week intervals are required. To maintain results, treatments every 6 months may be recommended.

Are there any side effects?

Side effects are minimal and are generally limited to a slight redness of the skin. This should not persist for more than a few minutes after treatment. You should contact us should there be any persistent redness, discomfort or sign of infection (cold sores, etc).

Can I still wear
make-up?

Yes, you can re-apply make-up immediately after the procedure. We can help you select makeup that will complement the effect of your treatment.

What is the difference between the Affirm with Multiplex and the Aramis laser?

At Medical Aesthetics of New England, PC, we give you choices. The Affirm usually provides more noticeable results, with some redness to the skin later during the day of treatment. The Aramis provides more gentle treatment, virtually pain free, at a lower cost. Please consider scheduling a free consultation with us to discuss the various options.
